Here's how it works: A full diagram of the neck is printed on a slide (picture1), which slides behind a widow printed with the instrument's major scale layout, (picture 2).
This "grays out"? the notes that are not in the key being displayed, and highlights the notes of the major triad (chord) in colors. So if you set it to display, for example, the "A" scale, you see every possible "A" chord, all the way up the neck, plus all the notes in the "A" scale in their fingerboard locations.
Simple theory rules printed on the back tell you how to modify these "A major" chords to produce minors, sevenths, diminished, etc, without flipping pages in a thirty pound chord book."Cause it's not a book. Just a movable map of the fingerboard that can be set to display the relevant information for playing in any key.
Also helps with transposing to different keys, and even calculating where to put your capo, if you choose to use one.
Anything that is based on major-scale theory, which it turns out is almost everything in music.
Beginning students use it to get a better feel for the neck of the instrument, teachers like it to give a clear visual aid for their students, and advanced pickers just have fun pushing it around looking for new ideas; a little, low-tech, interactive toy, in and of itself.
Comes with instructions and the inventor's business card so you can call or email for tips, tricks and good stuff to know.
Approx. 5X11 in. X 1/8 in thick, fits in a three ring notebook or instrument case.
Also available for Dobro, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle; right or left hand, as well as right-handed viola, cello and upright bass. To order for any of these instruments email: angiesumpter@aol.com
"The Banjo Fiddlewidget is such an in genius, yet simple tool, I don’t know why anyone has not thought of it before. This simple little chord guide not only educates you on chord structure, it allows you to broaden your scope of chord positions up and down the neck. The practical uses of the Banjo Fiddlewidget are limited only by one’s imagination. I highly recommend this tool not only for beginner players wishing to learn the chord structures, but also to more advanced players eager to create new innovative licks." Wil Huckabay - BanjoMD
